Is royalty allowed to go off the grid and pursue some other future?

Say a royal prince decides he doesn't want anything to do with the publicity and bureaucracy of being royal family anymore, and goes off the grid and moves to Norway to live off the land as a mountain hobbit (or something). Has this happened, ever? And is this allowed?
